Keeley Premium Quality Beer Flat Top Can

Keeley Premium Quality Flat Top

The Keeley Premium Quality Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in mid-century American contract brewing and regional distribution. Originating from the historic Keeley brand of Chicago, Illinois, this iteration was produced and canned by the Cumberland Brewing Company in Cumberland, Maryland.

Background and Brewing History

The Keeley name was originally established by the Keeley Brewing Company, a major brewing operation in Chicago. As the brewing landscape shifted and regional operations consolidated, contracts and brand rights led to Keeley-branded beer being packaged by other regional brewers, most notably Cumberland Brewing Company in Maryland and Best Brewing Company in Illinois. The Cumberland Brewing Company, famous for brands like Old Export and Old German, expanded its packaging lineup by producing Keeley under license for mid-Atlantic and regional markets.

Can Design and Attributes

The can showcases classic mid-century graphic design characterized by bold metallic coloration, clean typography, and the prominent Keeley script housed within an oval insignia. The label highlights the "Premium Quality Beer" moniker alongside the traditional "Just Right" slogan associated with the brand. The side panels carry the mandatory brewery identification crediting the Cumberland Brewing Company of Cumberland, Maryland.

Collector Notes and Variations

For breweriana collectors, the Cumberland attribution distinguishes this can from versions packaged by midwestern facilities. Variations exist across production runs, showing differences in canning plant manufacturer marks, side-panel text formatting, and lid stampings—such as state-specific tax lids used for regional distribution. Because Keeley was canned in both beer and ale formats across multiple regional facilities, tracking down the specific Cumberland Brewing Company variations remains a focal point for Maryland breweriana enthusiasts and specialists of cross-regional labels.
