Kentucky Malt Lager Flat Top Can

Fehr's Kentucky Malt Lager Can

Produced by the Frank Fehr Brewing Company of Louisville, Kentucky, the Kentucky Malt Lager flat top can represents an appealing piece of regional mid-century breweriana. Frank Fehr Brewing Company was one of Louisville's prominent industrial brewing operations, established in the late nineteenth century and playing a central role in the state's commercial brewing heritage.

The can features the prominent "Kentucky Malt Lager" brand presentation, often accented with the phrase "Extra Good" on its label face. Fabricated by the National Can Company, the design employs crisp mid-century typography and metallic lithography characteristic of postwar canned beverage packaging.

Collectors of Ohio River Valley and Kentucky cans recognize different variations in the label's printings. Known variations involve differences in mandatory text panels, including versions printed with or without specific state alcohol content statements to satisfy state-level distribution regulations. Frank Fehr Brewing also distributed a closely related Malt Liquor line with similar graphic styling.

During an era when local independent breweries in Louisville competed vigorously with expanding national shipping breweries, Kentucky Malt Lager represented the brewery's diversified product lineup before the company ceased operations in the 1960s. Today, the can is a prized item for collectors focused on Kentucky brewing history and mid-century flat tops.
