Kentucky Malt Liquor 12 Oz Zip Top Can

Oertel Kentucky Malt Liquor History

Produced by the Oertel Brewing Company in Louisville, Kentucky, this Kentucky Malt Liquor can highlights a notable chapter in Bluegrass State brewing history. Oertel was an established regional fixture anchored in Louisville's historic Butchertown neighborhood, operating alongside major local competitors such as Falls City Brewing Company and Frank Fehr Brewing Company.

During the mid-20th century expansion of the malt liquor segment, regional breweries developed specialized offerings to capture market share beyond traditional pale lagers. The Kentucky Malt Liquor label was crafted to project a strong regional presence across retail markets throughout Kentucky and surrounding distribution territories.

From a packaging standpoint, cans produced for the Oertel brewery were supplied by major container manufacturers, including the Continental Can Company. In breweriana circles, variations of this can are known to exist, exhibiting subtle differences in state-mandated alcohol disclaimer statements, mandatory brewery text layouts, and lid tax stamps required by various regional jurisdictions.

Following the eventual shuttering of the Oertel brewery facilities, packaging from the company's malt liquor lines became prized by collectors specializing in Ohio River Valley brewing artifacts and mid-century beverage can history.
