Kingsbury Near Beer Tab Top Can

The Kingsbury Brew Near Beer 12 oz can represents an interesting chapter in Midwestern brewing and packaging history. Originally rising to prominence during Prohibition under the Kunz & Bleser Brewing Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, the Kingsbury label carved out a lasting identity rooted in non-alcoholic cereal beverages. Following the brand's acquisition by the expanding G. Heileman Brewing Company, production moved under the "Kingsbury Div. of G. Heileman" banner in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

During an era when major regional breweries frequently phased out their non-alcoholic lines, Heileman continued to package Kingsbury Near Beer to serve the dedicated market for non-intoxicating cereal brews. The label design showcases Kingsbury's traditional heraldic crest, mid-century typography, and the federally required statement noting the brew contained less than one-half of one percent alcohol by volume.

For breweriana collectors, Heileman-era Kingsbury cans offer notable intrigue due to the parent company’s expanding multi-brewery footprint across the Midwest. As Heileman acquired additional brewing facilities, can manufacturers updated the mandatory plant listings along the seam. Collectors encounter variations featuring different city listings, such as Newport, Kentucky, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Evansville, Indiana alongside La Crosse. Additional variations exist with differing back story panels and minor textual shifts across manufacturing batches.

Kingsbury Near Beer outlasted many contemporary non-alcoholic regional labels. The brand survived multiple industry consolidations, eventually passing through the Stroh Brewery Company and into the Miller portfolio, cementing its legacy as one of Wisconsin's most enduring non-alcoholic beer labels.
