Kingsbury Brew Near Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Heileman's Kingsbury Near Beer

Kingsbury Brew Near Beer represents a notable chapter in American brewing history. Originally developed by the Kingsbury Breweries Company of Manitowoc and Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the brand came under the stewardship of the G. Heileman Brewing Company of La Crosse, Wisconsin, following a corporate merger. Heileman preserved the label and distributed it widely throughout the Midwest as a staple non-alcoholic malt beverage.

Historical Significance

The Kingsbury name originated during the Prohibition era when breweries adapted to federal restrictions by manufacturing legal near beer containing less than 0.5% alcohol by volume. Unlike many brands that abandoned their near-beer lines following the repeal of Prohibition, Kingsbury maintained the formulation as a permanent product line. Under G. Heileman's management, the brew remained an enduring commercial alternative in the non-alcoholic segment.

Design and Manufacturer Details

The 12-ounce can displays the traditional Kingsbury brand aesthetic, incorporating classic typography, regal crest motifs, and required non-alcoholic malt beverage statements. As G. Heileman expanded its manufacturing footprint across the United States, can production reflected the brewery's growing regional network. Known variations across production runs feature differences in mandatory city listings—including facilities in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Newport, Kentucky, and St. Paul, Minnesota—as well as shifts between steel and all-aluminum container construction.

Collector Notes

As corporate consolidation reshaped twentieth-century brewing, the Kingsbury trademark eventually passed to later owners, including Stroh and Miller. For breweriana collectors, this G. Heileman tab top can stands as an important artifact of Wisconsin brewing heritage and the evolution of American low-alcohol packaging.
