Kingsbury Brew Near Beer Flat Top Can

Kingsbury Near Beer Flat Top

The Kingsbury Brew Near Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in Wisconsin breweriana, originating from the Kingsbury Breweries Company in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. While the Kingsbury brand produced a wide portfolio of traditional lagers and ales, the company maintained a dedicated non-alcoholic cereal beverage line long after Repeal.

The Kingsbury name itself originated during the Prohibition era as a near-beer brand to sustain operations while standard brewing was prohibited. Following the end of Prohibition, Kingsbury continued to market and package its non-alcoholic brew, making it one of the few regional operations to actively can a near beer during the mid-20th century flat top era.

For collectors of mid-century cans, this piece provides an interesting contrast to typical beer cans of the period, as non-alcoholic offerings made up a relatively small portion of overall canned beverage production. The graphic design highlights the classic Kingsbury branding alongside the Sheboygan brewery location and required non-alcoholic legal text.

Collectors have identified variations of this flat top can across its production life. These variations feature differences in side-panel dietary copy—such as varying calorie disclosures tailored to health-conscious consumers—as well as differing can manufacturer stamps and legal phrasing. The longevity of the Kingsbury near-beer name eventually carried through multiple brewery acquisitions, solidifying its place in American brewing history.
