Kingsbury Brew Near Beer Flat Top Can

Kingsbury Near Beer Can History

The Kingsbury Brew Near Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in mid-century American brewing history, originating from the Kingsbury Breweries Company in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. While the Kingsbury brand originally developed non-alcoholic cereal beverages during the Prohibition era, the brewery continued packaging near beer into the flat top era to serve consumers seeking non-alcoholic alternatives.

Collectors of breweriana value this can for its distinctive presentation and historical continuity. Unlike standard regional lager cans of the era, Kingsbury Brew explicitly identified itself as a non-alcoholic cereal brew or near beer. The design prominently features the classic Kingsbury branding alongside heritage text, including the phrase "Wisconsin's Famous."

Over the course of its production run, the can was manufactured with commercial linings by major container makers, including American Can Company's "Keglined" process and Continental Can Company. Label variations exist across production batches, distinguished by subtle differences in manufacturer marks, typography placement, and calorie statements printed on the panels to appeal to calorie-conscious consumers.

The persistence of the Kingsbury near beer label is a recognized piece of regional lore. Even as independent Wisconsin breweries contended with industry consolidation during the post-war period, Kingsbury maintained an active non-alcoholic packaging line. The Sheboygan-labeled flat top stands out as a prime artifact of Wisconsin brewing heritage, documenting an era when regional producers dedicated canning runs specifically to near beer.
