Koch's Old Vienna Beer Cone Top Can

Old Vienna Cone Top Overview

Produced for the Koch Beverage Company (historically operating as the Koch Beverage & Ice Co.) in Wapakoneta, Ohio, the Koch's Old Vienna Beer cone top is a prominent piece of regional breweriana. Continental Can Company supplied the high-profile container hardware for the small Auglaize County brewery during its post-Prohibition packaging runs.

Brewery Background and Heritage

The Koch Beverage operation had deep roots in Wapakoneta's brewing heritage, tracing its origins through 19th-century predecessors such as Kolter & Koch and the City Brewing Company. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the company marketed Old Vienna alongside brands like Merit Beer as one of its flagship products. The label served local and regional markets across western Ohio until the brewery ultimately closed its doors in the mid-20th century.

Labeling and Variations

Collectors recognize variations of this can that reflect changing federal and state labeling requirements. Variations differ based on mandatory regulatory text, including versions featuring an Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement, variations with state-mandated alcohol percentage range statements, and later examples produced without tax notices.

Today, the Old Vienna cone top remains a prized centerpiece for Ohio breweriana enthusiasts and regional can collectors documenting small-town Midwestern brewing operations.
