Koch's Old Vienna Beer Cone Top Can

Koch's Old Vienna Cone Top

The Koch's Old Vienna Beer cone top can represents a classic piece of mid-century packaging from the Koch Beverage Company (also operating historically as the Koch Beverage & Ice Co.) in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Manufactured by the Continental Can Company, this twelve-ounce high-profile container was distributed across western Ohio.

Brewery Heritage

Koch Beverage had deep roots in Wapakoneta's local brewing history in Auglaize County. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the company became an important regional producer, supplying local establishments and retail markets. The Old Vienna label served as one of the brewery's key packaged offerings during the cone top era.

Can Design and Variations

The can showcases traditional Old Vienna typography accompanied by classic crest and heraldic motifs. It was fabricated as a high-profile cone top with a soldered side seam.

Variations of the can exist among known specimens, primarily distinguished by statutory labeling differences reflecting federal and state regulations of the period. Notable variations include cans displaying specific alcohol tolerance statements (such as notations regarding alcohol content between 3.2% and 7%) as well as variations bearing the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) text versus later releases without it.

Collector Significance

Because it originated from an independent small-town brewery that closed in the mid-20th century, the Koch's Old Vienna can remains a notable prize for collectors specializing in Ohio breweriana and regional cone tops.
