Koehler Beer Flat Top Can

Mid-Century Koehler Beer Flat Top Can

This 12-ounce flat top beer can highlights mid-century packaging produced for the Erie Brewing Company of Erie, Pennsylvania. The design features a tri-color palette composed of turquoise, gold, and cream vertical segments. Dominating the upper section is a stylized eagle emblem outlined in gold trim, surrounded by fine line flourishes. An arced black banner carries the "KOEHLER" brand name in bold white lettering, underscored by the word "Beer" rendered in a sweeping script font and marked with "BEER 12 FL. OZ." near the base.

Koehler served as the primary flagship brand of the Erie Brewing Company, tracing its lineage back to the Jackson Koehler Eagle Brewery. Over the decades, the brand secured a dedicated regional following across northwestern Pennsylvania, western New York, and northeastern Ohio. Marketed broadly through radio, print, and television, Koehler became widely recognized through promotional campaigns emphasizing "the collar that it keeps". It was presented as a dependable, classic lager rooted in regional heritage before production under the original brewery ceased in the late 1970s.

The brewery traced its foundation to nineteenth-century brewing traditions in Erie, including brewing operations associated with the Koehler family dating to 1847 and Jackson Koehler's Eagle Brewery established in 1883. In 1899, local operations merged to establish the Erie Brewing Company. The company weathered Prohibition by turning to non-alcoholic products, subsequently resuming full brewing operations with the repeal in 1933. Erie Brewing Company remained an important regional employer and independent producer until escalating competition from national brewing giants led to the facility's closure in 1978.

For breweriana enthusiasts, cans from the Erie Brewing Company represent a pivotal era of Pennsylvania brewing history. Mid-century flat tops displaying the traditional Koehler eagle and sharp graphic layout are sought after by collectors specializing in Keystone State brewery artifacts and vintage mid-century can art.
