Kol Premium Quality Beer Flat Top Can

Kol Premium Quality Flat Top

The Kol Premium Quality Beer flat top was released by the Atlantic Brewing Company, which operated out of its historic facility along West Fullerton Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Atlantic Brewing Company was a major fixture of Chicago's mid-century brewing scene, managing a prolific portfolio of proprietary and regional labels such as Tavern Pale, Cold Brau, and Champetite.

Graphic Design and Presentation

The can showcases bold mid-century commercial artwork anchored by the concise, stylized "Kol" brand name. Designed to stand out in grocery displays and package stores, the layout features prominent "Premium Quality" lettering paired with balanced geometric paneling. Manufactured using the American Can Company's patented "Keglined" interior coating, the container represents the mid-century era of metallic Chicago breweriana.

Label History and Variations

Atlantic introduced the Kol brand during the 1950s as regional producers pushed specialized value and premium labels to compete with emerging national conglomerates. Known variations exist across production runs, reflecting minor adjustments to mandatory side-panel statements, mandatory brewery address lines, and lid tax stampings. Additionally, the Kol trademark appeared across multiple operations in the region, including production runs affiliated with the Best Brewing Corporation in Chicago.

Today, the Kol flat top serves as an important artifact of Chicago's post-Prohibition brewing heritage, representing an era when local independent packaging defined Midwest retail shelves.
