Kol Premium Quality Beer Flat Top Can

Kol Premium Quality Beer Overview

The Kol Premium Quality Beer flat top can is a notable piece of Pacific Northwest breweriana produced for the Silver Springs Brewing Company in Tacoma, Washington. Featuring crisp mid-century typography and the prominent tagline "Extra Light Extra Dry," the design represents regional marketing trends that highlighted light, refreshing profiles.

Regional Format and Production

Unlike the standard 12-ounce containers common throughout much of the United States, this can was produced in an 11-ounce capacity. This volume was characteristic of the Pacific Northwest beverage market during this era, aligning with regional bottling traditions and distribution networks across Washington and neighboring territories.

Manufactured by the American Can Company, the can features the classic "Keglined" oval emblem along the seam. Many examples trace back to American Can Company's regional plant in Salem, Oregon, reflecting the localized supply chain that supported Tacoma's independent brewing operations.

Collector Lore and Variations

Kol cans from Tacoma are particularly well-known among breweriana enthusiasts due to surplus inventory that survived the closure of the facility. Collectors preserved quantities of unused can stock and unfilled shells directly from the plant.

Variations exist across different production runs, featuring minor differences in regulatory statements, side panel verbiage, and can maker marks. Today, the Kol flat top remains an essential artifact representing the post-war industrial brewing landscape of the Puget Sound region.
