Krueger Bock Flat Top Can

Krueger Bock Flat Top History

The G. Krueger Brewing Company of Newark, New Jersey, occupies a monumental place in breweriana history as the pioneer that partnered with the American Can Company to commercially introduce canned beer to the American public in the 1930s. While Krueger's flagship Finest Beer and Cream Ale were the initial offerings to enter the canning lines, the brewery soon applied the packaging format to its seasonal specialty: Krueger Bock Beer.

Design and Iconography

The Krueger Bock flat top features distinctive seasonal artwork that sets it apart from standard Krueger releases. The centerpiece of the label is an illustration of a goat's head, the traditional symbol of German-style bock brewing. In addition to the bock goat emblem, examples incorporate Krueger’s mascot, the "K-Man," alongside bold typography bearing the classic Krueger name. The graphics were lithographed onto the three-piece steel body with vivid enamel finishes, creating a striking aesthetic for display.

Variations and Collector Significance

Because bock beer was packaged strictly on a seasonal basis for spring distribution, production volumes were significantly lower than year-round flagship labels. As a result, Krueger Bock flat tops are much scarcer than standard Krueger Beer or Cream Ale cans.

Across different production runs, several variations are known to exist among collectors. These variations reflect subtle label updates, including differences in mandatory legal text, adjustments to the K-Man illustration, and the presence or absence of the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement on the side panels.

Legacy in Breweriana

Krueger Bock represents a celebrated intersection between brewing tradition and packaging innovation. The combination of its connection to Newark's storied brewing industry, classic bock-themed lithography, and relative scarcity makes this flat top a prized acquisition among breweriana collectors.
