Krueger Cream Ale Cone Top History

The G. Krueger Brewing Company of Newark, New Jersey, occupies a foundational place in breweriana lore as the pioneering brewery that first partnered with can manufacturers to bring canned beer to consumers. While Krueger famously launched the canned beer era with flat top containers, the brewery quickly expanded its packaging lineup to include cone top designs manufactured by Continental Can Company, particularly for larger serving formats.

Among breweriana collectors, the Krueger Cream Ale cone top remains one of the most celebrated and sought-after labels from the Newark facility. The can's graphics celebrate Krueger's heritage, frequently incorporating the brand's well-known "K-Man" mascot or illustrative motifs such as a can alongside a poured glass on a serving tray.

Several distinct variations exist among surviving Krueger Cream Ale cone tops, reflecting evolving manufacturing and regulatory standards of the era. Collectors note subtle differences across production batches, including variations in background finishes—such as metallic silver fields versus painted panels—different placements of Continental Can Company's "Cap-Sealed" insignia, and changes in mandatory taxation labeling like the "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement. Because these larger cone tops were filled in smaller production runs compared to standard cans, they represent an essential chapter of early canned beer history and continue to command substantial attention at breweriana auctions.
