Krueger Finest Beer Flat Top Can

Krueger Finest Beer Flat Top

The Krueger Finest Beer flat top can represents an iconic piece of American breweriana from the G. Krueger Brewing Company of Newark, New Jersey. G. Krueger holds a foundational place in packaging history as the pioneering brewery that first introduced canned beer to the commercial marketplace in 1935 in partnership with the American Can Company.

Design and Branding

The front and side panels showcase classic Krueger branding, frequently highlighted by the smiling Krueger mascot, widely referred to by collectors as the "K-Man". The can features bold typography and clean graphic elements that characterized the brewery's mid-century aesthetic, making it an instantly recognizable label in beverage packaging history.

Tax Statement and Purpose

This specific can is distinguished by its "Withdrawn Free" tax statement. Under federal tax regulations, containers bearing the Withdrawn Free of Internal Revenue Tax wording were exempt from domestic excise taxes. These cans were designated either for export to civilian markets abroad or for distribution to members of the United States armed forces.

Collector Significance

Due to Krueger's milestone status in the transition from bottled to canned beer, containers bearing the brewery's name are central to breweriana collections. Cans from this line exhibit differences across production runs, with collectors noting variations in tax text, mandatory brewery text, and subtle artistic modifications to the mascot and side panels.
