La Premium Lager Beer Test Can

Anheuser-Busch LA Test Can

The LA Premium Lager Beer Test Can represents a fascinating chapter in modern breweriana from Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis, Missouri. Created as an experimental prototype during the brewery's foray into the reduced-alcohol beverage category, this test can was produced for internal evaluations and consumer test markets.

The LA brand became central to one of the most prominent trademark disputes in American brewing history. Anheuser-Busch engaged in federal litigation against competing brewers, including The Stroh Brewery Company and G. Heileman Brewing Company, over the exclusive rights to the "LA" name. The courts ultimately ruled that "LA" was descriptive shorthand for "low alcohol" or "light alcohol" rather than a protectable brand trademark, paving the way for competing breweries to use the term on their own low-alcohol offerings.

Test cans like this one were produced in restricted quantities to assess visual appeal and shelf presence before final retail distribution. While regular production versions settled on finalized labeling and slogans, test versions highlight alternative typography, experimental phrasing, and layout choices that never saw widespread national release.

For breweriana collectors, pre-production test cans from major brewing houses offer significant historical value. Known variations exist among test issues, featuring distinct differences in font weighting, color application, and brewery text that set them apart from standard production runs.
