Labatt's Beer 12 Oz Zip Top Can

Labatt's Beer 12 Oz Zip Top Can

This straight steel 12-ounce zip top can represents an early 1960s domestic release of the famous Canadian brand. A standout feature of the container is the explanatory text along the bottom red band, which explains that the beverage was brewed in the United States under license from Labatt's of Canada and describes the recipe as "Canadian Light." The main label showcases the classic Labatt maple leaf and heraldic supporters framed within blue and gold geometric borders.

Founded in London, Ontario, in 1828 by John Kinder Labatt, the brewing company grew into one of Canada's leading beverage institutions. During the mid-20th century, Labatt sought direct expansion into the lucrative United States market. To bypass import hurdles and reach American consumers on the Pacific coast, the brand licensed its recipe to domestic facilities, pitching the product as an authentic, lighter Canadian-style lager designed for American preferences.

Production of this can took place at General Brewing Company's facility in Azusa, California. Originally established in San Francisco following the repeal of Prohibition as the home of Lucky Lager, General Brewing experienced rapid post-war growth that spurred the construction of the large Azusa brewing plant in 1949. In 1958, John Labatt Limited acquired a controlling stake in General Brewing to secure an American manufacturing presence. The Azusa plant remained a key regional production center through the mid-1960s, during a turbulent era of industry consolidation and antitrust litigation, before the facility was eventually sold.

Among breweriana enthusiasts, this can holds significant appeal as an uncommon cross-border licensing crossover. It is prized by collectors specializing in vintage pull tabs, California brewing history, and the evolution of international brands in the American market.
