Leinenkugel's Beer Flat Top Can

Leinenkugel's Flat Top Legacy

The Leinenkugel's Beer flat top can represents a classic mid-century packaging era for the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Founded in 1867 along the Duncan Creek, the brewery established a deep regional following across Wisconsin and neighboring states, eventually adopting flat top metal containers as canned beer gained mainstream popularity.

Design and Iconography

The visual presentation of the can showcases the brewery's traditional branding, highlighted by the profile portrait paying homage to the local Ojibwe (Chippewa) heritage. Label graphics also emphasize the brewery's use of local "Big Eddy" spring water, presenting the bold Leinenkugel script against vibrant enameled and metallic finishes.

Manufacturing and Variations

The commercial run of these cans was produced predominantly by the Continental Can Company. Known variations exist among surviving examples, displaying subtle differences in can company hallmark insignias, mandatory state tax and alcohol statement placements, and minor typography adjustments along the seam. Notably, scarce trial sample cans produced by other packaging manufacturers during supplier evaluations remain among the most celebrated historical oddities related to this can's production run.

Collector Heritage

As a premier piece of upper Midwest breweriana, this can stands as an enduring artifact of Chippewa Falls brewing history from the era before pull tabs transformed beverage packaging.
