Shamokin's Innsbrau Lager Can

The Lf Innsbrau Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can represents an interesting chapter in Pennsylvania brewing history, originating from the Fuhrmann & Schmidt Brewing Company located in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Long known throughout the anthracite coal region simply as "F&S," the brewery maintained a deep local presence from its early-twentieth-century establishment on South Harrison Street through the shifting brewing landscape of the mid-twentieth century.

Brewery Background and Label History

During the post-Prohibition era and subsequent industry consolidation, regional breweries frequently registered alternate company trade names and proprietary labels to expand retail distribution. Fuhrmann & Schmidt operated under various DBA names, including the Innsbrau Brewing Company, to package and distribute Innsbrau Lager Beer. Following Fuhrmann & Schmidt's acquisition as a subsidiary of Philadelphia's Henry F. Ortlieb Brewing Company, the Shamokin facility continued canning regional offerings and value lines such as Innsbrau until the plant ceased brewing operations.

Design and Collector Significance

The can's graphics prominently showcase the Innsbrau branding and its recognized "Continental Lager Flavor" designation. Printed on straight-steel bodies, the label reflects the mid-century commercial art standard across regional packaged beer.

Among breweriana collectors, the can is valued as an authentic artifact from Shamokin's industrial past. Different variations exist across the production run, distinguished by subtle differences in mandatory brewery text, layout positioning, and canning manufacturer codes stamped along the seam and lids.
