Lone Star Handy Keg Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Lone Star Handy Keg Draft Can

The Lone Star Handy Keg Draft can was produced by the Lone Star Brewing Company of San Antonio, Texas. Developed around the concept of bringing tavern-style draft presentation into a single-serve container, the "Handy Keg" line represents a distinct chapter in Southwestern beer packaging history.

Graphic Design and Presentation

The can's aesthetic was styled to evoke the look of a traditional draft beer barrel through a metallic background and contrasting banded motifs. Front and center is the iconic Lone Star shield and red star insignia, framed by prominent "Handy Keg" and "Draft Beer" typography. The label also incorporates several classic brand marketing elements, including text callouts such as "Charcoal Filtered," "Brewed with Pure Artesian Water," "Certified Premium Quality," and the familiar slogan "Honest to Goodness".

Production and Variations

Manufactured across multiple can production methods, the container was fabricated using both straight steel and crimped steel formats, including containers produced via the MiraForm process. Known variations exist across different production runs. These variations primarily feature differences in the mandatory brewery location statements—ranging from lone San Antonio designations to multi-city credits that include Oklahoma City—as well as minor alterations in bottom slogan placement, font arrangements, and manufacturer seam marks.

Breweriana Significance

The Handy Keg series reflects the competitive push among regional American brewers to package and market the draft experience directly to retail consumers. As a standout example of Lone Star State advertising, this can remains a staple piece for collectors specializing in San Antonio brewing heritage and regional draft-themed can series.
