Lucky Lager Aged Dated Beer Flat Top Can

Lucky Lager 11 oz Azusa Flat Top

This 11-ounce flat top can represents a classic mid-century packaging format for Lucky Lager, distinguished by its 11-ounce volume and the mandatory brewery text positioned along the lower rim. The bottom line designates the Lucky Lager Brewing Company in Azusa, California, and cites an additional brewery location. The visual presentation centers on the brand's iconic geometric motif: a bold red 'X' framed within patterned yellow quadrants, anchored at the midpoint by an oval insignia proclaiming "AGE-DATED BEER".

Lucky Lager was commercially introduced in 1934 following the repeal of Prohibition. Founded by Eugene Selvage alongside brewing executive Paul C. von Gontard and German brewmaster Julius Kerber, the brand was formulated to rival traditional European lagers. To emphasize freshness and quality assurance, Lucky promoted its lagering time through the "Age-Dated" campaign, stamping dates directly onto its packaging. Backed by campaigns celebrating Western life and quality, Lucky Lager grew rapidly to become one of the most popular regional beers across the Western United States.

Originally established as the General Brewing Company in San Francisco, the business officially adopted the Lucky Lager Brewing Company name in 1948. To satisfy surging postwar demand in Southern California, the company opened a modern production facility in Azusa in 1949. The Azusa plant served as a key regional manufacturing hub until industry consolidation led to its sale to the Miller Brewing Company in 1966.

In the realm of breweriana, 11-ounce steel flat tops reflect a distinctive packaging trend embraced by Pacific coast brewers during the 1950s. Flat tops featuring the Azusa plant mandatory are valued by collectors as tangible artifacts from Lucky Lager's postwar expansion across California.
