Lucky Lager Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Lucky Lager 16 Oz Aluminum Tab Top

Produced by General Brewing in Los Angeles, California, this 16-ounce aluminum tab top container represents the larger "Half Quart" format of one of the American West's defining regional beers. The can prominently displays the brand's classic stylized red ribbon script above a scenic green line-drawn landscape depicting evergreens, water, and distant mountain peaks. Beneath the illustration, an extensive promotional text block reinforces brand heritage, declaring that "Our Lager Beer has been a Western favorite since 1934" and detailing the brewery's commitment to patient aging and traditional lagering methods.

Lucky Lager was introduced commercially in 1934, shortly after the repeal of Prohibition. The brand was positioned to rival European lagers in quality and smoothness, relying on lengthy lagering times rather than shortcuts. Renowned artist Charles Stafford Duncan designed the brand's signature looping red letterform. Backed by campaigns touting regional pride—such as "It's Lucky when you live in the West"—Lucky Lager surged in popularity through the 1950s and 1960s, eventually surpassing competitors to become one of the top-selling brands on the Pacific Coast before corporate mergers altered its footprint.

The company was established in San Francisco by Eugene Selvage alongside Paul von Gontard and German brewmaster Julius Kerber under the name General Brewing Company. High postwar demand prompted significant expansion, leading the firm to open a Southern California facility in the Los Angeles area in 1949. Although the enterprise operated under the Lucky Lager Brewing Company name for several decades, it returned to the General Brewing Company moniker in the 1970s under brewing magnate Paul Kalmanovitz.

Sixteen-ounce half-quart cans occupy a distinct niche among breweriana enthusiasts compared to standard twelve-ounce issues. Tab top examples from this era capture a period of packaging evolution, pairing modern aluminum construction with traditional mid-century graphic typography and regional landscape art.
