Lucky Lager Beer Flat Top Can

San Francisco Lucky Lager Flat Top

This 12-ounce flat top can represents an early packaging run for Lucky Lager produced in San Francisco, California. Dating to the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) era, the can bears the mandatory federal tax statement. The visual presentation centers on Lucky Lager's classic red saltire cross spanning the body, framing a central medallion emblazoned with "AGE DATED BEER" above the base instruction "COOL BEFORE SERVING".

The Lucky Lager brand debuted in 1934, developed to compete with established lagers by emphasizing meticulous cellar aging and high-quality ingredients. Lucky Lager pioneered the concept of "age-dating" by stamping packaging dates directly onto containers, assuring consumers of proper maturation and freshness. Supported by memorable campaigns and the famous regional motto, "It's Lucky When You Live in the West," the brand grew into one of the most widely consumed beers across the western United States.

The enterprise behind the can was established in San Francisco following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 by Eugene Selvage alongside Baron Paul von Gontard, a grandson of Adolphus Busch. Operating from a modern plant on Newhall Street in the Bayview district, the operation initially incorporated as the General Brewing Corporation. As sales surged, the business adopted the name of its flagship beverage, becoming the Lucky Lager Brewing Company. The brewery rapidly expanded throughout the Pacific Coast and Intermountain West, adding facilities across California, Washington, and Utah before mid-century industry consolidations reshaped the market.

Among breweriana collectors, tax-era Lucky Lager flat tops are regarded as quintessential artifacts of West Coast brewing history. The distinctive red cross layout, paired with the pioneering age-dating promotion, makes this can an essential representative piece of mid-century regional packaging.
