Magna Carta Ale 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Magna Carta Ale Pint Can Overview

The Magna Carta Ale 16 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable chapter in Pennsylvania brewing history, originating under the Magna Carta Brewing Company name in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While labeled under the Magna Carta moniker, this designation served as an alternate trade name utilized by the historic Pittsburgh Brewing Company operating from their Liberty Avenue facility.

During this era, regional brewing companies frequently adopted subsidiary brand identities and trade names to market specialized product lines, target distinct distributor territories, or produce private labels without diluting their primary flagship brands. The Magna Carta label was developed as part of this commercial strategy, pairing traditional historical charter motifs with domestic ale packaging.

Can Design and Details

Manufactured in the 16-fluid-ounce tall boy format, the can showcases branding inspired by its historic namesake. The graphic design incorporates parchment-style backgrounds, formal typography, and classic heraldic elements that gave the brand a distinctive appearance on store shelves. The larger one-pint volume separated it from the more standard twelve-ounce containers of the time.

Collectibility and Variations

For breweriana enthusiasts, the Magna Carta 16-ounce can is an interesting collectible representing Pittsburgh's extensive contract and d/b/a canning operations. Variations exist among surviving cans, exhibiting slight differences in mandatory brewery text layout, seam style, background luster, and top lid stamping depending on the specific manufacturing run. Because these secondary labels were produced in limited quantities compared to major national brands, they remain sought-after pieces for collectors specializing in Pennsylvania beer history.
