Malt Duck A Premium Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

National's Malt Duck Beer Can

Produced by the storied National Brewing Company of Baltimore, Maryland, the Malt Duck can represents an adventurous chapter in American breweriana. National Brewing, celebrated for regional staples like National Bohemian and Colt 45, introduced Malt Duck during an era when major regional brewers began exploring fruit-infused malt beverages to capture consumer interest sparked by the popularity of Cold Duck wine drinks.

Industry and Historical Context

During a transformative period for American brewing, National positioned Malt Duck as an innovative, approachable alternative to conventional lagers. The product gained a dedicated cult following and is frequently cited by beverage historians as an early commercial forerunner to the flavored malt beverage boom that exploded decades later. Following corporate mergers and the eventual acquisition of National Brewing by Carling and later ownership changes, the original label was retired, though its nostalgic legacy later prompted modern craft revivals.

Design and Collector Significance

For breweriana enthusiasts, the can is prized for its stylized duck imagery, distinctive typography, and bold aesthetic that stood apart from traditional beer packaging of its era. The front panel prominently displays the "A Premium Beer" designation, framed by the brand's recognizable graphic elements.

Collectors actively study known variations of this can, which feature differences in mandatory city text, brewery statements, and manufacturer markings. Because National operated and packaged through multiple facilities, these subtle text variations provide depth for collectors specializing in Baltimore brewing history, flavored malt beverages, and mid-to-late twentieth-century regional cans.
