Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Meister Brau Flat Top

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents a classic piece of mid-century Midwestern breweriana, produced for the Peter Hand Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand on Chicago's North Side, the brewery established Meister Brau as its flagship label, which grew to become a household name across Illinois and the broader Great Lakes region.

For collectors of Chicago breweriana, this can holds historical significance tied directly to the legacy of the city's brewing industry. Peter Hand was famously Chicago's last operating legacy macro-brewery of its era before shuttering in the late 1970s. During the height of Meister Brau's market presence, the brewery invested heavily in high-profile marketing campaigns, sponsoring major sports teams like the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls, alongside the long-running "Meister Brau Showcase" on WGN Radio.

The brewery also made brewing history when it acquired and refined a low-calorie formula to introduce Meister Brau Lite. This brand paved the way for modern light beer marketing before the Meister Brau labels and formulas were sold to Miller Brewing, who subsequently transformed the recipe into Miller Lite.

Within the can collecting hobby, several graphic and manufacturing variations exist for this label. Collectors distinguish between print runs featuring subtle differences in metallic paint coloration, canning marks from suppliers such as the American Can Company, and adjusted brewery text or mandatory legal phrasing on the side panels.
