Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

1952 Meister Brau Pilsener Can

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can was produced in 1952 by the Peter Hand Brewery of Chicago, Illinois. Meister Brau served as the flagship label for the historic brewery, which was established in 1891 on Chicago's North Side by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand.

During the mid-20th century, Peter Hand was one of the Midwest's most prominent regional breweries and an essential fixture of Chicago culture. The brewery heavily promoted Meister Brau across the city, sponsoring major sports teams including the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls. The brand was also celebrated on the airwaves as the longtime sponsor of Franklyn MacCormack's popular overnight radio program, the Meister Brau Showcase, broadcast on WGN.

This 12-ounce flat top can represents a classic era of mid-century packaging for Peter Hand. Collectors value the can for its bold typography, traditional crest imagery, and regional heritage. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, exhibiting subtle shifts in metallic sheen, mandatory side panel formatting, and brewery markings.

Peter Hand holds a significant position in American industrial brewing history as the last traditional macro-brewery to operate within the city limits of Chicago. The company is also famous for introducing Meister Brau Lite; after facing financial challenges, Peter Hand sold its brand portfolio to the Miller Brewing Company, which adapted the acquired low-calorie formula to launch Miller Lite nationwide.
