Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Meister Brau Flat Top

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents one of the most prominent regional beer labels produced in Chicago, Illinois. Manufactured for the historic Peter Hand Brewery Company, the Meister Brau label served as the flagship offering for decades following the company's founding by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand.

Peter Hand Brewery was an integral fixture of Chicago's industrial brewing landscape and eventually became the last legacy macro-brewery operating within city limits before its final closure. The brand achieved deep cultural integration across the Midwest through aggressive local marketing campaigns. This included major sponsorships for Chicago sports franchises—such as the White Sox, Blackhawks, and Bulls—as well as the widely broadcast overnight radio program Meister Brau Showcase hosted by Franklyn MacCormack on WGN.

In broader brewing history, the Meister Brau label holds a significant place as the direct predecessor to modern mass-market light beer. Peter Hand acquired a low-carbohydrate formula to launch Meister Brau Lite. When the company faced financial strain, it sold its portfolio of brand names to the Miller Brewing Company, which rebranded and reformulated the concept into Miller Lite.

For breweriana collectors, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top is recognized for its bold mid-century typography and clean graphic layout. Variations exist across production runs, displaying subtle differences in can manufacturer marks, mandatory legal text placements, and graphic trim. The brewery also produced scenic pictorial variants under the Meister Brau line, cementing the label as an essential centerpiece of Chicago brewing history.
