Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand's Chicago Flagship

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents a classic piece of Midwestern breweriana from Chicago, Illinois. Produced by the Peter Hand Brewery Company, located on North Sheffield Avenue, Meister Brau stood as the flagship label for what would become the last historic macro-brewery operating within Chicago's city limits.

Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery grew into a regional powerhouse. During the height of the brand's mid-century distribution, Meister Brau was a fixture in Chicago popular culture. The brewery heavily sponsored major local sports franchises—including the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls—alongside late-night broadcasts such as the Meister Brau Showcase hosted by Franklyn MacCormack on WGN radio.

The brewery also holds a prominent place in industrial brewing history for developing Meister Brau Lite, one of the earliest commercial low-calorie beers. When the company faced financial strain and sold its assets to the Miller Brewing Company in 1972, Miller adapted the recipe and concept to launch Miller Lite nationwide.

For collectors, the can features the brand's heraldic crest imagery, Germanic-style typography, and metallic accents. Lithographed by major container manufacturers including the American Can Company, known variations exist across production runs, displaying subtle differences in brewery corporate designations, canning factory codes, and mandatory side-panel statements. These graphical details make the can a foundational piece for enthusiasts of Chicago brewing history.
