Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand's Classic Meister Brau

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents the flagship offering from the Peter Hand Brewery Company of Chicago, Illinois. Established in 1891 by Prussian immigrant Peter Hand, the brewery grew into a powerhouse of Chicago's brewing landscape, with Meister Brau standing as its signature product for generations of local beer drinkers.

For breweriana collectors, cans from the Peter Hand Brewery hold substantial historical value due to the company's storied presence in the Windy City. Peter Hand Brewery was notable for being the last remaining historic commercial brewery operating within Chicago city limits before closing in the late 1970s. Furthermore, the Meister Brau brand gained national historic significance when the company developed Meister Brau Lite—the low-calorie formulation that was later sold to the Miller Brewing Company and rebranded into Miller Lite.

The graphic design of this flat top can highlights traditional mid-century brewing aesthetics, showcasing the prominent Meister Brau script, German-style heraldic crests, and the Peter Hand Brewing Company mandatory text. Over its years in distribution, the brewery issued the label with various manufacturing differences, including subtle changes in lithography, text layout, canning codes, and specialty background motifs. These design nuances make the can a popular subject for regional collectors aiming to assemble comprehensive runs of Chicago breweriana.
