Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand's Chicago Flagship Can

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents a defining piece of Chicago brewing history. Produced by the Peter Hand Brewery Company of Chicago, Illinois, this container held the brewery's most famous flagship offering.

Founded on Chicago's North Side by Prussian immigrant Peter Hand, the brewery grew into a regional powerhouse. Meister Brau became synonymous with mid-century Chicago culture, backed by prominent marketing campaigns that included sponsorships of major local sports franchises and popular late-night radio broadcasts. The Peter Hand Brewing Company holds a storied place in industrial history as the last traditional brewing facility to operate within the city limits of Chicago during the twentieth century. Additionally, the company is famous in brewing lore for developing Meister Brau Lite, the formula and brand assets of which were acquired by Miller Brewing to create Miller Lite.

For breweriana enthusiasts, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top is an essential shelf piece. The can design features bold Meister Brau typography paired with heraldic crest elements and clean metallic detailing that reflect classic mid-century graphic styling. Lithographed by major container manufacturers such as the American Can Company, the cans feature several label variations across different production runs, showing minor differences in side-panel mandatory text, graphic framing, and metallic finishes. Its deep connection to the golden age of Chicago brewing makes it a centerpiece for Midwestern beer can collections.
