Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand's Meister Brau Can

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents a prominent chapter in Midwestern brewing history. Manufactured for the Peter Hand Brewery Company of Chicago, Illinois, this can housed the brewery's longtime flagship beer and stands as a key artifact from the city's industrial past.

Founded on Chicago's North Side in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the Peter Hand Brewing Company grew into one of the region's powerhouse operations. The brewery survived Prohibition and built Meister Brau into a household name throughout the Midwest. To support the brand, the company engaged in massive promotional campaigns, sponsoring major sports teams including the Chicago White Sox, Blackhawks, and Bulls, while also broadcasting the popular late-night Meister Brau Showcase on WGN radio.

The brewery holds a notable place in American brewing lore as the origin point of commercial light beer. The company formulated and marketed Meister Brau Lite before selling its brand assets to Miller Brewing, which adapted the recipe and concept to launch Miller Lite. When the North Avenue plant ultimately closed its doors in the late 1970s, it marked the end of Chicago's last historic macro-brewery of that generation.

For breweriana enthusiasts, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top is prized for its classic mid-century graphic presentation. The label showcases traditional Germanic typography paired with heraldic crest imagery and metallic accents. Lithographed by major container manufacturers, known variations exist across production runs, displaying subtle shifts in mandatory legal text, canning company maker marks, and metallic background finishes. Its deep connection to the golden age of Chicago brewing makes this can an essential centerpiece for regional beer can collections.
