Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand's Iconic Chicago Can

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can is one of the most recognizable artifacts of Chicago's industrial brewing heritage. Produced by the Peter Hand Brewing Company on Chicago's North Side, this can represents the premier label of a firm deeply rooted in Midwestern history.

Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and American Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery grew into a regional powerhouse. Meister Brau served as Peter Hand's flagship offering, supported by extensive mid-century regional promotions that included sponsorships of major Chicago sports teams like the White Sox, Blackhawks, and Bulls, alongside popular late-night WGN radio broadcasts.

The Peter Hand Brewing Company holds a prominent place in American commercial history as the birthplace of modern commercial light beer. In the late 1960s, the company developed and marketed Meister Brau Lite. Following financial strain, the company sold its brand labels and recipe to the Miller Brewing Company in 1972, which used the formulation to launch Miller Lite. When the Sheffield and North Avenue facility eventually shuttered in 1978, it marked the closure of Chicago's last legacy macro-brewery of that era.

For breweriana collectors, the Meister Brau Pilsener can stands out with its mid-century graphic design, heraldic crests, and bold typography. Lithographed by container manufacturers including the American Can Company, known variations exist across manufacturing runs. These variations feature subtle differences in mandatory legal text placement, corporate name designations, metallic trim, and canning plant maker marks.
