Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Peter Hand Flagship Can

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents the flagship label of the Peter Hand Brewing Company, an institution deeply woven into Chicago's industrial heritage. Founded on Sheffield Avenue by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery expanded over the decades to become one of the Midwest's most prominent regional brewing powerhouses.

Peter Hand heavily promoted Meister Brau across mid-century Midwestern athletics and media. The brewery sponsored major professional Chicago sports teams, including the White Sox, Blackhawks, and Bulls. The brand also gained widespread acclaim through its sponsorship of the popular overnight radio broadcast, the Meister Brau Showcase, hosted by Franklyn MacCormack on Chicago's WGN.

The brewery holds a notable place in American commercial brewing history through its development of Meister Brau Lite. After acquiring and refining a low-carbohydrate formula, the brewery introduced the pioneering light beer to the market. Following financial challenges in the early 1970s, the company sold its brand portfolio to the Miller Brewing Company, which reformulated and rebranded the product into Miller Lite. When the Chicago plant eventually shuttered, it marked the closure of the city's last traditional macro-brewery of that era.

For breweriana collectors, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top is an essential piece of Illinois brewing history. The can's design showcases bold Germanic typography alongside heraldic crest motifs and crisp metallic elements. Produced by major container manufacturers like the American Can Company, several label variations exist across different manufacturing runs, featuring subtle differences in mandatory statement formatting, side-panel text layout, and canning company maker marks.
