Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Iconic Meister Brau Can

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top represents the flagship offering of the historic Peter Hand Brewing Company, located in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and American Civil War veteran Peter Hand on North Avenue, the brewery grew into one of the city's defining industrial icons and stood as Chicago's last surviving legacy macro-brewery before closing in the late 1970s.

During mid-century operations, Peter Hand aggressively promoted the Meister Brau label throughout the Midwest, dominating local advertising with extensive sponsorship campaigns for Chicago sports teams—including the White Sox, Bulls, and Blackhawks—alongside its famous late-night Meister Brau Showcase broadcasts on WGN Radio.

Beyond its local popularity, the Meister Brau label holds a notable place in American brewing history as the origin of modern light beer. The brewery formulated Meister Brau Lite, a low-calorie recipe that proved regionally successful before Miller Brewing Company acquired the Meister Brau brands in 1972, reformulating and rebranding the concept into Miller Lite.

For collectors of Midwestern breweriana, this flat top can is a staple of mid-century Chicago packaging. Canned primarily through the American Can Company, several graphic and text variations exist across different manufacturing runs, including subtle adjustments to legal text, brewery identification, and promotional taglines.
