Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Storied Meister Brau Can

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can is a standout piece of Midwestern brewing heritage, representing the flagship brand of the Peter Hand Brewing Company in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand on Chicago's North Side, the brewery persevered through Prohibition to become a cornerstone of the Windy City's industrial brewing scene and eventually stood as the city's last traditional macro-brewery before closing in the late 1970s.

During the peak mid-century era, Meister Brau was a fixture of Chicago sports and media culture. The brewery supported its primary label with prominent sponsorships of local franchises, including the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls. The brand also became familiar to late-night radio listeners across the Midwest as the sponsor of the Meister Brau Showcase hosted by Franklyn MacCormack on WGN.

The brewery also secured an indelible place in national brewing history through its development of Meister Brau Lite, one of the earliest commercially marketed low-calorie beers. When financial strain led to the sale of the company's brand portfolio to the Miller Brewing Company in 1972, Miller adopted this foundational formula and branding concept to launch Miller Lite.

For breweriana collectors, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top can is appreciated for its clean mid-century aesthetic, pairing bold Germanic blackletter typography with heraldic crest elements and the historic brewery emblem. Manufactured by packaging giants like the American Can Company, variations exist across production runs, displaying subtle differences in side-panel mandatory statements, metallic trims, and canning manufacturer markings.
