Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Peter Hand Meister Brau

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents a defining piece of Midwest breweriana, originating from the Peter Hand Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and American Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery grew into an industrial anchor on Chicago's North Side, establishing Meister Brau as its flagship label.

During its peak, Meister Brau became deeply embedded in Chicago's popular culture through extensive regional advertising. The brewery sponsored major professional sports franchises, including the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls. It also gained wide recognition over the airwaves through its sponsorship of the late-night Meister Brau Showcase hosted by Franklyn MacCormack on WGN Radio.

The brewery holds an influential place in American brewing history through its development of Meister Brau Lite. When the company sold its brand portfolio to the Miller Brewing Company in 1972, Miller took the acquired low-carbohydrate formula and brand concept to launch Miller Lite. When the Peter Hand plant finally ceased operations in 1978, it marked the closure of the last traditional macro-brewery operating within the city limits of Chicago.

For collectors, this flat top can is celebrated for its classic mid-century graphic presentation, featuring bold typography centered around a traditional heraldic crest. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, showcasing subtle differences in canning company maker marks, mandatory side-panel statements, and metallic border detailing.
