Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Meister Brau Flat Top

Produced by Chicago's historic Peter Hand Brewing Company, the Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents a defining era of mid-century Midwestern brewing. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery built its regional identity around its flagship Meister Brau brand, eventually operating as the last legacy macro-brewery in the city of Chicago.

Meister Brau achieved widespread recognition across the Great Lakes region, heavily supported by prominent promotional campaigns. The can's namesake label became a household staple through extensive local advertising, including sponsorships of major Chicago sports teams—such as the White Sox, Bulls, and Blackhawks—alongside the popular overnight Meister Brau Showcase broadcast on WGN Radio.

The Peter Hand Brewery also holds a notable place in modern beverage history through this brand family. The company introduced Meister Brau Lite, a formulation later acquired by the Miller Brewing Company in the early 1970s that directly paved the way for the nationwide launch of Miller Lite.

Among breweriana enthusiasts, this flat top is sought after for its distinctive typography and traditional heraldic crest motif. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, showcasing subtle differences in canning manufacturer logos, mandatory text placements, and graphic details.
