Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand's Chicago Flagship Can

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents a historic piece of Midwestern brewing heritage. Brewed and canned by the Peter Hand Brewery Company on Chicago's North Side, Meister Brau served as the flagship label for what would become the last traditional brewing facility to operate within Chicago city limits.

Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery grew into a regional powerhouse. Meister Brau became deeply woven into mid-century Chicago culture, propelled by high-profile marketing campaigns that included sponsorships of major local sports teams like the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls, alongside the long-running Meister Brau Showcase on WGN radio.

The Peter Hand brewery also holds a prominent place in industry history for pioneering commercial light beer. The company developed Meister Brau Lite; when the business faced financial difficulties in the 1970s, Miller Brewing Company acquired the brand and formula, subsequently transforming it into Miller Lite.

For breweriana collectors, this flat top can is recognized by its heraldic crest emblem, bold lettering, and metallic lithography produced by container manufacturers such as the American Can Company. Several variations exist across different manufacturing batches, featuring differences in metallic finishes, graphic framing, and side-panel mandatory text.
