Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand's Chicago Flagship Can

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top represents a quintessential centerpiece of mid-century Chicago breweriana. Produced by the historic Peter Hand Brewery Company, located at North and Sheffield Avenues on Chicago's North Side, this can showcases the brewery's most famous and enduring flagship label.

Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery survived Prohibition to become the dominant independent brewing operation in Chicago. While countless local breweries succumbed to industry consolidation, Peter Hand maintained a commanding regional presence, proudly promoting Meister Brau through major sports sponsorships, widespread billboards, and extensive canning runs.

For can collectors, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top offers rich historical intrigue and visual appeal. The graphics prominently display the classic Meister Brau crest and heraldic shield motifs, framed by distinctive bold typography and rich metallic tones. Throughout its canning history, the brewery released multiple graphic variations of the Meister Brau flat top, including metallic background revisions, mandatory label text alterations, and pictorial "Fiesta Pack" series featuring scenic illustrations.

Peter Hand holds a notable place in American brewing history as the origin point for modern commercial light beer; the company developed Meister Brau Lite before selling its brand portfolio to the Miller Brewing Company in the early 1970s. When the Peter Hand facility finally shuttered, it was the last operating legacy brewery within Chicago city limits. Today, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top remains a celebrated staple for collectors focused on Midwestern brewing heritage and Chicago industrial history.
