Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand's Chicago Flagship

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents a defining piece of Chicago's industrial brewing history. Produced by the Peter Hand Brewery Company along Sheffield Avenue, Meister Brau served for decades as the flagship label of one of the Windy City's most prominent brewing institutions.

Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery grew into a regional powerhouse that survived Prohibition and cemented Meister Brau as a household name across the Midwest. During its mid-century height, the brand maintained a massive presence in Chicago culture, sponsoring major sports franchises such as the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls, alongside the popular late-night Meister Brau Showcase on WGN Radio.

The brewery holds an important place in American brewing lore as the last legacy commercial brewery to operate within the city limits of Chicago during that era. Furthermore, the company developed Meister Brau Lite, an innovative formula that was acquired by the Miller Brewing Company during a corporate buyout, ultimately serving as the direct foundation for Miller Lite.

For breweriana collectors, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top is widely recognized for its bold mid-century lithography. The label design prominently showcases Germanic-style lettering, heraldic crest elements, and metallic trim detailing. Containers manufactured by major can fabricators, such as the American Can Company, exhibit known variations across different production runs. These differences appear in the layout of mandatory legal statements, corporate address designations, and minor framing details.
