Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Meister Brau Pilsener Flat Top

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can is a classic artifact of Chicago brewing history, produced by the Peter Hand Brewery Company. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery established Meister Brau as its flagship label, growing into one of the most prominent regional brands in the Midwest.

Throughout the mid-twentieth century, Peter Hand supported the Meister Brau brand with extensive regional advertising. The brewery became a household name across the Windy City by sponsoring major sports franchises—including the Chicago White Sox, Blackhawks, and Bulls—and broadcasting the popular overnight Meister Brau Showcase hosted by Franklyn MacCormack on WGN radio.

The brewery holds a notable place in brewing lore as the birthplace of the modern mainstream light beer phenomenon. Peter Hand reformulated a low-calorie recipe to create Meister Brau Lite. When financial challenges led to a sale of brand assets in 1972, Miller Brewing Company acquired the Meister Brau brand portfolio and modified that formulation into Miller Lite. Peter Hand Brewery continued operations until its closure in 1978, marking the end of Chicago's last legacy macro-brewery of that era.

Among breweriana collectors, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top is appreciated for its clean mid-century graphic design and bold presentation. Variations of the can exist from different production runs, distinguished by slight changes in mandatory manufacturer text and can company trademarks.
