Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Meister Brau Pilsener Can History

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents one of the most prominent pieces of Chicago brewing heritage. Produced for the Peter Hand Brewery Company located along Sheffield Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, this can carried the brewery's longtime flagship brand into taverns and homes throughout the Midwest.

Peter Hand, a Prussian immigrant and American Civil War veteran, founded his eponymous brewing company in 1891. The Meister Brau brand quickly became a Chicago staple, surviving Prohibition and anchoring the brewery's operations through the mid-20th century. Peter Hand Brewery occupies a significant place in American brewing lore, as it was later renamed Meister Brau Inc. and developed Meister Brau Lite—the formulation that Miller Brewing Company acquired to launch Miller Lite. When the facility ultimately ceased operations, it marked the end of Chicago’s original generation of legacy macro-breweries.

For breweriana enthusiasts, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top stands out for its bold mid-century graphic presentation. The label prominently showcases traditional Germanic blackletter typography paired with the brewery crest and heraldic imagery. Across the era of flat top packaging, container manufacturers such as the American Can Company produced variations. Known variations include subtle differences in mandatory legal text, metallic trim accents, and alternative background colors associated with promotional releases.

Because of Peter Hand Brewery's storied standing as an iconic Windy City institution, the Meister Brau Pilsener can remains a cornerstone display piece for collectors focusing on Illinois brewing history and mid-century graphic design.
