Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Meister Brau Flat Top

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents the premier flagship label of the historic Peter Hand Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand on Sheffield Avenue, the brewery grew into one of the most prominent regional brewing forces in the Midwest, anchoring its corporate identity around the Meister Brau name.

During the mid-twentieth century, Peter Hand aggressively promoted Meister Brau across the Chicago metropolitan market through extensive broadcast advertising and major sports sponsorships, supporting teams such as the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls. The brand also became a fixture of Chicago late-night culture through its long-running sponsorship of the Meister Brau Showcase hosted by Franklyn MacCormack on WGN radio.

The brewery holds a notable place in American brewing history as the launchpad for the modern light beer industry. After acquiring and refining a low-carbohydrate formula, the company created Meister Brau Lite. When financial difficulties forced a sale in 1972, the Miller Brewing Company acquired the Meister Brau trademarks and recipes, rebranding the low-calorie formula to launch Miller Lite. When the North Avenue plant finally ceased operations in 1978, it marked the closure of the city's last traditional macro-brewery of that era.

For breweriana collectors, the Meister Brau Pilsener flat top stands as a quintessential Midwestern artifact. The design features bold Meister Brau typography accented by heraldic crest elements and clean metallic detailing. Collectors recognize various label variations produced over the years, displaying subtle differences in side-panel mandatory text formatting, brewery corporate designations, and manufacturer markings from major can makers like the American Can Company.
