Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Iconic Meister Brau

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer can stands as one of the premier artifacts from Chicago's rich brewing heritage. Brewed by the Peter Hand Brewing Company on North Avenue, Meister Brau served as the flagship label for what eventually became the last remaining large-scale commercial brewery operating in the city of Chicago.

Founded by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery grew into a regional powerhouse. Meister Brau became a cultural staple across the Midwest, heavily promoted through sponsorship of major professional sports franchises, including the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls. The brand also gained widespread recognition across the airwaves as the longtime sponsor of the popular late-night radio program hosted by Franklyn MacCormack on WGN.

In addition to the standard design centered around the traditional Meister Brau crest, collectors recognize variations across different production runs. These include subtle shifts in mandatory statement formatting, can manufacturer marks, and specialized decorative releases, such as the illustrated Fiesta Pack series depicting scenic outdoor leisure pastimes.

The Peter Hand brewery also holds an influential place in broader industry history as the originator of commercial light beer. The company formulated and launched Meister Brau Lite. When the business encountered financial difficulties and sold its brand assets, the recipe and concept were acquired to create Miller Lite. Because of this connection to Chicago history and the evolution of American brewing, the Meister Brau Pilsener can remains a staple piece for breweriana collections.
