Meister Brau Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Meister Brau Flat Top

The Meister Brau Pilsener Beer flat top can represents the flagship label of the historic Peter Hand Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand on North Avenue, the company grew into one of the Midwest's most prominent regional brewing powerhouses.

Meister Brau became deeply ingrained in Chicago culture through extensive mid-century marketing. The brand sponsored major local sports franchises, including the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls. It was also widely recognized across Midwestern airwaves as the sponsor of the popular overnight radio program Meister Brau Showcase, hosted by Franklyn MacCormack on WGN.

The Peter Hand Brewing Company holds a notable place in American industrial brewing history. It stood as the last traditional macro-brewery to operate within the city limits of Chicago before its eventual closure in the late 1970s. The brewery is also famous for introducing Meister Brau Lite; after facing financial challenges, the company sold its brand portfolio to the Miller Brewing Company, which used the acquired formula and concept to launch Miller Lite.

Among breweriana collectors, this flat top can is recognized for its mid-century graphic presentation, showcasing bold Meister Brau typography alongside traditional heraldic crest imagery. Manufactured by major packaging firms such as the American Can Company, the label features known variations across different production runs, displaying slight shifts in metallic finish, side-panel mandatory text formatting, and corporate brewery name styling.
