Meister Brau Premium Lager Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Meister Brau 16 Oz Miller Can

The Meister Brau Premium Lager Beer 16 oz tab top can represents a notable chapter in American brewing history, marking the transition of a legacy Midwestern label into the national portfolio of the Miller Brewing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Heritage and Acquisition

Meister Brau originated with Chicago's Peter Hand Brewing Company, founded in the late nineteenth century. In the late 1960s, the brewery renamed itself Meister Brau, Inc., centering its identity around its flagship lager. After experiencing financial difficulties, Miller Brewing Company acquired the Meister Brau portfolio, including its trademarks and formulas. While this acquisition famously gave rise to Miller Lite through the reformulation of Meister Brau Lite, Miller also maintained Meister Brau Premium Lager as a budget-friendly staple alongside brands like Milwaukee's Best.

Design and Collector Significance

This 16-ounce pint can showcases the traditional Meister Brau heraldic crest, shield emblem, and distinctive typography tailored for Miller's packaging lines. Marketed as an economical, larger-format option, the pint can saw distribution across various markets served by Miller's Milwaukee operations.

Collectors cataloging post-acquisition Miller labels note that known variations exist across production runs, showing subtle differences in mandatory brewery text, distributor notices, and paint luster. Representing a major corporate transition that reshaped the modern beer landscape, the Meister Brau 16 oz tab top remains a prominent fixture in vintage breweriana collections.
