Meister Brau The Custom Brew Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Meister Brau Flat Top

The Meister Brau "The Custom Brew" flat top beer can is an iconic piece of breweriana representing the Peter Hand Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1891 on North Avenue by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery established Meister Brau as its flagship label, growing it into one of the most recognized regional brands in the Midwest.

Brewery Heritage and Significance

Peter Hand Brewing Company operated as a powerhouse Chicago institution for decades. During the post-Prohibition era, the company promoted Meister Brau under the slogan "The Custom Brew" to emphasize traditional craftsmanship. The brewery was deeply woven into Chicago culture, maintaining high-profile sponsorships with the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls, alongside massive billboard and radio campaigns.

Peter Hand Brewing also secured a permanent place in brewing history through its development of Meister Brau Lite. When the company encountered financial challenges, it sold its portfolio to Miller Brewing, where the low-calorie recipe was famously rebranded as Miller Lite. When the North Avenue facility ultimately closed its doors, it marked the end of an era as Chicago's last surviving legacy macro-brewery.

Graphic Design and Collector Notes

The can features the traditional Meister Brau heraldic crest paired with bold script lettering and "The Custom Brew" designation. For collectors, known variations exist across manufacturing runs, distinguished by slight differences in mandatory text formatting, canning company maker's marks, and legal brewery statements.
