Meister Brau The Custom Brew Beer Flat Top Can

Chicago's Meister Brau Custom Brew

The Meister Brau "The Custom Brew" flat top can is a prominent artifact of Midwestern breweriana, originating from the Peter Hand Brewing Company in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1891 on Chicago's North Side by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand, the brewery grew into one of the region's largest independent brewing operations, with Meister Brau serving as its flagship label.

During its mid-century height, Peter Hand promoted Meister Brau through extensive marketing campaigns throughout the Chicago area, sponsoring local sports and hosting the late-night Meister Brau Showcase on WGN radio. The prominent "The Custom Brew" designation highlighted on this can was central to the brewery's regional advertising, designed to emphasize specialized craft and distinguish the brand against emerging national competitors.

The can's graphic design exemplifies mid-century industrial lithography, featuring bold Meister Brau script alongside heraldic crest motifs and metallic finishes. Produced by major can manufacturers, including the American Can Company, the container has several known variations across production runs, showing subtle differences in mandatory side-panel text, border framing, and canning marks.

For collectors, this can represents an important bridge in American brewing history. Peter Hand Brewing Company holds historical distinction as the last traditional macro-brewery to operate within the city of Chicago. Furthermore, the company earned legendary status in industrial history for creating Meister Brau Lite—the recipe and trademark assets of which were later purchased to become Miller Lite. As a visual relic of Chicago's mid-century brewing landscape, this can remains an essential centerpiece in regional beer can collections.
