Michelob Beer Test Can

Michelob Packaging Prototype

The Michelob Beer Test Can documents a crucial transitional chapter in the packaging history of Anheuser-Busch. First formulated in 1896 as a draught offering intended for connoisseurs, Michelob occupied an upscale niche within the brewer's portfolio for generations. When the brewery prepared to transition this flagship super-premium brand to metal containers, experimental sample cans were produced to test consumer reception, shelf impact, and graphic layouts before launching full-scale nationwide distribution.

Manufactured in limited sample quantities for internal review and distributor evaluation, these trial containers were filled at regional facilities, including the Anheuser-Busch plant in Columbus, Ohio. To maintain Michelob's distinct identity—previously established in specialized glassware and bottles—designers explored special decorative methods. Many experimental issues featured foil-laminated labels, alternative metallic sheens, and modified arrangements of the trademark red ribbon emblem and script typography.

Variations exist across different evaluation runs, displaying differences in metallic trim, label materials, and mandatory brewery text referencing manufacturing facilities like Columbus alongside the company's historic St. Louis headquarters. Because these test cans were never intended for sustained retail marketing and were produced strictly for trial evaluation, they represent significant historical artifacts of Anheuser-Busch packaging development.
